SHOW paperback

by Henry Horenstein

Introduction by Murray Hill

Pond Press proudly announces the publication of SHOW, noted photographer Henry Horenstein's long-anticipated look at modern burlesque. The photographs were made from 2001 to 2009, and serve as an homage to the neo-burlesque resurgence of the last several years.

The noir-styled images in SHOW are variously amusing, sexy, and harsh—true reflections of the world they document. The book covers a myriad of burlesque-style performance, including drag, fetish, and sideshow. Horenstein says, "these performers are today's version of the 'starving artist'—living on the margins and delivering their personal expression through song, dance, comedy, and narrative—charged sexually and often highly political."

Although not a book of celebrities per se, SHOW includes portraits of many of burlesque's most recognizable performers, including Dita Von Teese and Catherine D-lish, Angie and Helen Pontani, Peek-a-Boo Point, Julie Atlas Muz, Miss Saturn, Dirty Martini, Jackie Beat, Bonnie Dunn, Verushka—and, of course, the legendary Murray Hill.

SHOW will be available as an Artist's Edition limited to 600 copies only, a soft cover edition of 400 copies plus a special edition of 20 deluxe Colllector's Edition books with an original, signed and numbered print. A matte varnish over sumptuous duotone printing suggests gravure-style books and magazines of the 1940s and 1950s—when burlesque famously flourished. The book's format stands tall at 13" x 9.5".

Photographer Henry Horenstein has been a prolific chronicler of popular culture for over 30 years, having authored over 30 books, including work on country music ( Honky Tonk), horse racing ( Racing Days), and life in the 70s ( Close Relations). Other books of his work include the monographs ANIMALIA and Humans. Henry lives in Boston, and is Professor of Photography at Rhode Island School of Design.

Time Out/NY called introduction author Murray Hill "the king of comedy"—and that's no joke. "The hardest working middle-aged man in show business" is the toast of New York burlesque, and much more. One of his productions, "A Murray Little Christmas," is a staple of the New York holiday season. Paper magazine inducted Murray to the Nightlife Hall of Fame, and the New York Times called him the "reigning patriarch of downtown performance."

A film by William A. Anderson, Henry Horenstein, and Hillary Spera, called MR SHOWBIZ: THE MURRAY HILL STORY, will be released later in 2010 by Swinging Door Films.
